Image Analysis

Dirt and rocks on Mars

Computers can do more than display images. Images can give us information which is difficult or impossible to get from any other source. If we look at images through microscopes, telescopes, of from satellite images, we may see things which we may otherwise no be able to see. Through the use of computer processing and other high tech means, we can see in ways that our bodies cannot possibly do naturally. If we capture those pictures in computer files, we can use various programs to learn new things. This project will introduce you to this type of image analysis.

We will use a program called Scion Image for our image analysis. Scion Image was originally developed for the National Institutes of Health, a federal government agency. This means that the program is free. Scion Image is now owned and updated by a private company called SCION Corporation. However, the National Institutes of Health has continued development of a similar program called ImageJ. You may install either or both on your computer. Both work in very similar ways. ImageJ is newer and, in my opinion, a bit easier to use. You may use either for this project. Both programs are available for WINDOWS computers and other types of computers.
