Unless something prevents me from copying the exams files off of your USB drives right after the exam ends, your USB drives will be available for pickup about one to one and a half hours after the exam ends. After that, they will be available from the computer science departmental secretary during business hours.
Thu May 1 09:25:16 EDT 2008
The final exam will be Access only. To study for it, make sure you know how to recreate everything in the university.mdb database example (updated for class today; delete your previous versions and study from this version). Only those Access features and capabilities shown in the university example will be covered on the final exam. The exam will be open Access level one book, closed everything else.
Tue Apr 29 16:39:26 EDT 2008
One more feature of Access added to the university.mdb database example: designing a new query from an existing query. Look for two new queries that I will show how to create in class on Thrusday. Their names are currentTuitionStats and studyTimeStats. They show the sum, average, maximum, and minimum of the current tuition paid by each student; and the sum, average, maximum, and minimum of the study times of each student.
Fri Apr 25 17:41:40 EDT 2008
Here is the university example university.mdb updated for what we will do in class Tuesday. A field named weeklyStudyHours was added to the enrollment table.
Thu Apr 17 09:45:11 EDT 2008
The house cleaning company database on today's exam is like the university database: for student think worker and for department and course think room and cleaning task. A student enrolled in a department's course is like a worker assigned a cleaning task for some room. I added some queries to the university database that are more like the queries on the exam that the ones already there. Have a look. Here is the university example university.mdb that we have completed so far in class updated for the exam today.

Then you will turn in your USB drive at the end of class.

Common student misconception.
Teaching means making me learn. The job of a college professor is to make me learn.
The reality.
Teaching does not mean making a student learn. The job of a professor is to provide for students the opportunity and environment to learn, to show them what they need to learn, and to assess student learning in order to assign a grade. It is the responsibility of the student to learn.
Mon Mar 10 08:24:05 EDT 2008
Scenario.
A student comes to class to turn in a project on his/her USB drive. The student finds to his/her great dismay that the files are missing on the USB drive and requests an extension to recreate the files. I ask about the backup USB drive. The student responds sheepishly that the files were not backed up onto the backup USB.
Result.
The student must take a zero on the assignment and use his/her 100 "slack" "personal leave" points. The student protests that that is not how he/she wants to use those points.
Response.
I don't know where your files might have ended up or how they might have disappeared, but I do know that you had no copies on your backup USB. I try to emphasize creating backup copies of files and even include those exact instructions on exams. If you don't do backups, then you suffer the consequences if something goes wrong. The consequences are painful and frustrating, as you are experiencing. I'm willing to bet that from now on you will be more conscientious making backups. This lesson is invaluable.
I don't like to hear "Well, I don't want to use my 100 points for that." because this kind of situation is exactly what the 100 points are for.
After trying many different schemes for late assignments and makeup exams, I have decided to incorporate 100 "slack" points into the grading scheme and accept no late assignments and give no makeup exams regardless of the reason. Why? It is very time consuming to decide what reasons are good and what are not. Obviously, you think your reason is good. I have decided not to characterize reasons as good or bad because it takes up too much time and energy to decide exactly where to draw the line between acceptable and not acceptable reasons.
Mon Mar 10 08:19:18 EDT 2008
Question.
Why are the exams in class and not take home?
Answer.
The projects are designed to give students the knowledge and practice for the exams. The latter are used to assess the student learning that occurred (or not) during the projects. The exam length and time allowed are designed to make sure that floundering around with the questions, trying to figure out the material on the fly at exam time instead of thorough preparation before the exam, results in a low grade, as it should.
The projects are take home with some in-class time allocated so that students can take as much time as needed to learn the material. The exams are not for learning but for assessment and are therefore not take home.
In my judgement, five out-of-class projects and three in-class exams and a final are a good balance.
Sat Mar 8 07:27:36 EST 2008
Question.
Since I did terrible on my first project and exam but better on my second project, is it still possible for me to pass with at least a C?
Answer.
Here is a way to figure out the answer using Excel. Build an Excel spreadsheet and fill in your grades so far. Then put in hypothetical grades for everything else. Look at the syllabus, find the grading scheme, and put a formula into your spreadsheet that calculates your average. Play around with the hypothetical grades to see what the possibilities are.
To answer your question, that is exactly what I would do. Since Excel is part of this course, it is perfect for you to do it instead!

Check the online syllabus to see that soon only 80 points will be earned for your picture/questionnaire/office visit. There are some people who have not yet done it.

If you have had your Rowan network login name and password for a while, you might not have a public.www folder in your H: drive. Go to the Help Desk in Memorial Hall and ask them to set one up for you to hold your picture file (and Web pages for Project 2). They will do it (a little ``prodding'' might be needed) because at least one class member so far got them to do it.

I am getting some questions about booting the Ubuntu Linux CD on people's own computers. Here are some ideas. The Ubuntu Linux CD should boot on most Windows machines (not Macs). One thing to check is to make sure your computer's BIOS boot order is set to check the CD first then the hard drive. If that is not the problem, it is hard to say what to do without seeing what happens on your computer's screen. If you want to bring your laptop to class or my office, I'll be happy to try to get Ubuntu to boot on it. Setting the BIOS boot order is different for different computers. In general, when a computer first starts booting, the screen says type such-and-such a key to enter setup mode or some mode like that. So you type that key, something like F2 or Delete (I've seen all kinds). Once in the setup screen, look for something like boot order. Then move the CD before the hard drive. I'll be happy to show you if this all seems kind of baffling.

I am seeing a lot of problems getting your picture.jpg file into the public.www folder of your H: drive. When you enter the Web address http://users.rowan.edu/~username (replace username with your Rowan network login name) into a browser address box, you should see something that looks like this (click the link to see), not something like this or this or this. Do you see the problem in each of the bad ones? Here is a list of everybody's picture Web address. Find yours and click on it. You should see your picture without any additional clicks. If not then you need to fix the problem. You will not get any office visit points until a click on your link below brings up your picture.

Some people are storing their digital photograph as picture.jpg.jpg or Picture.jpg (instead of picture.jpg). I think picture.jpg.jpg comes from the ``hide file extensions'' folder option that you should uncheck as shown in class. After unchecking ``hide file extensions'' look at the file name again and remove the extra .jpg if it is there. Also make sure everything is lowercase.
