Insert the Ubuntu CD-ROM into the computer's CD drive and reboot. When you see the countdown 30, 29, ..., you can wait or hit the enter key.
If the screen goes dark for more than a second, hit and release the Shift key.
Once you see the desktop, look for the Auto button on the bottom of your monitor (the left-most button). Push and release the button. If you push the on/off button (right-most) by mistake, don't panic; just turn the monitor back on, no harm done. The Auto button is particulary useful if the image on the monitor screen looks to small or not centered, that is, if there is a black band on any side of the monitor screen.
If the network icon in the upper right says the network is not connected (this sometimes happens it seems), then move to a different computer or reboot the machine into Windows and then back into Ubuntu.
Check System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects tab to make sure None is selected.
If you want a screen resolution different from 1280x1024 or if that is what did not come up, check System > Preferences > Screen Resolution to make a change.
One way to add programs is to select Applications > Add/Remove and look at what is available. Another way is to select System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager for what can be installed. We will use one of these methods later to install scribus. If you use OpenOffice a lot, you might want to install msttcorefonts. If you want to do Web page design while running Ubuntu, download the nvu program.
If these programs don't show up in Synaptic, check the repositories to make sure they are all enabled (Main, Universe, Multiverse, Restricted) and then click the Reload button.
Click the red icon in the upper right and select Restart.
To print to the laser printer in our classroom, Robinson 312, do this each time you boot the Ubuntu CD. Commands can be copy-pasted.
The commands 2--6 above (without the numbers!) can be copied from this Web page and pasted into the terminal window: hold down left mouse button and drag (copy) across a command on this Web page, then left-click on the terminal box on the task bar on the bottom, then click the scroll wheel in the terminal window, then hit the Enter key.
