The God of the Bible or What does the Bible say about our God?

This is the "study" I promised I would get together someday about the God of the Bible. I have, for the most part, used the Amplified for the scriptures simply because it has a tendency to go overboard in explaining what the various verses are about. As an example, I include the following example. This is only example. Those that are not Christian, please only look at these examples for what they are, examples. Look at how Amplified explains a verse compared to the other translations, etc.

====================================================================

John 12:48 - KJV - He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my works, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

John 12:48 - NAS - He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.

John 12:48 - Amplified - And one who rejects Me, and persistently set Me at naught, refusing to accept My teachings, has his Judge (however); for the (very) message that I have spoken will itself judge and convict him on the last day.

====================================================================

There are 6 parts of the "study", including this introduction. To help those with limits and the like, I have tried to keep all parts down to less than 100 lines. Hopefully they will arrive in order. They all say "Part x" at the top, so it should be pretty easy to keep track of them.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: For the Non-Christian:

1. To show how the Bible presents God to Christians. To show the One God, who manifests Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

2. To explain why, to a certain extent, Christians appear to be driven, and why they say their way is the only way. There are countless scriptures that command the Christian to witness. These are not included here, maybe sometime later.

3. This is not (though if you must, you must) to be a document for flames. This is for hopefully, some intelligent discussion, and if you wish, you may publish anything you have on alternate faiths to show how they are or are not compatible with Christianity and what they might have to be "another way".

4. I used the Bible for all of my reference points since it is the document that is the "root" of the Christian faith. There are a multitude of other good books, and commentaries, but for now I wanted to use the Bible. If you want to talk/post about other religions, please post from their "root" documents. As an example, the Koran if Islam. (If I misspelled either, no offense intended.)

5. This document is biased toward Christianity, but that is my faith. You will see some of my comments about "other ways", but they are in general. I don't know the exact beliefs of most of the "other" faiths, but as you see in some of my examples, comments, and the like, our Bible does not encourage us to do so. I have however, no reason not to read a posting about Islam, etc. My faith is in Christ, but I wouldn't mind posting questions on points of one if posted. I would be curious as to how sin is atoned for, and the like.

6. This may also be an exercise to find out how many of the "open minded" individuals REALLY want to give "equal and due time" to ALL faiths and the like.

For the Christian:

1. As a study guide to Christians that just begins to explain "Why we believe what we do", and "How does the Bible reveal our God to us?" Much of this taken from CARIS study notes.

2. To enlighten, if possible, things about our God that you might not have though much of, or been aware of. Hopefully to help your love for our God to grow, your faith to expand.

3. This is going to some non-Christian lists. Therefore the explanations about the study being slanted towards Christianity. For the Christian lists, this would not have been necessary.

======================================================================== Subject: God - Part 1

Part 1 - What does the Bible say about our God?

There is only ONE God. The God of the Bible tells us:

Isaiah 43:10 - "You are My witnesses, says the Lord, and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know me, believe me, and remain steadfast to Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me."

According to what our God tells us, He's the only one. No other god every was, no other god will ever be. He wants us to "know" that, to "believe" that, and to "understand" that. There have been those that say, Christians think there way is the only way. Well, if there are no other gods, then why should I worship some other god that isn't a god at all? In our belief then, we can worship God, or worship a god. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of choice that I can see. Those that say there might be other ways that God expressed himself. If this were the case, it would be something similar to "For Budda so loved the world that he gave his only begotten daughter that whosoever believes in her should not perish but have everlasting life." This is not an attempt to blaspheme God, but only to say that if He showed himself to others, He would still be God, maybe a different name, maybe even a different sex although the Eternal does not have a sex. Hopefully my point is made. Another way of saying it would be, I live in Richmond. Washington DC is north. If the Bible told me that I should go north to get to Washington DC, and if the Koran, pulling an example out of the air, were about the same God, would it not also say to go north to get to Washington DC. Instead these other "road maps to the same god" tell us to go East, West, South, or to meditate and we will get to DC.

Well perhaps God does allow for some "other way"...

Deuteronomy 32.39 - "See now that I am He, there is no god beside Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of My hand."

Humph. Looks like He is pretty serious about it. Well, there is Father, Son and Holy Ghost, but one God? How does the Bible handle that? First, does the Bible say that our God has more than one part to Him, or give clues to His being plural?

Deuteronomy 6:4 - "Here, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is One!" (One = Echod = A compound unity of one).

Amos 4:10-11: "I have sent out among you the pestilence (which I made) epidemic in Egypt; your young men I slew with the sword; and I took into exile your horses; and I made the stench of your camp come up into your nostrils; yet you did not return to Me, says the Lord. (11)I have overthrown some among you, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a brand plucked out of the burning. Yet you did not return to me, says the Lord."

"I have... as when God.." God as when God? Seems to refer to more than one.

Genesis 19:24 - "Then the Lord rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of the heavens."

Another scripture about the same event, but once again talks about "the Lord... from the Lord."

I Corinthians 8:6 - "Yet for us there is only one God, the Father, Who is the Source of all things, and for Whom we have life, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through, and by Whom are all things and through and by Whom we ourselves exist."

Well, from Part 1 we have seen that as Christians, we worship the one God, the only God. And, while God is one, there are "parts" of him, 3 parts, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. These parts make up the one God. Some time I posted, "We don't need to understand, only believe". I don't understand all of this, but this is how God tells me He is. Along the same line, there are those that try to tell us that God is a female using "s/he" and other such phrases. Now, we know that the heavenly have no sex, and we have been told there is no marriage and the like in heaven, so the resurrected have no "sex" as it were. My thoughts are that if God CHOSE to show himself as male, then that is the way I worship Him. Trying to change the sex of God seems to me to be the first step in watering down the gospel. "I would love You more, or be able to understand You more if You were female. I would love You more, or be able to understand You more If You just didn't take such a hard stand on sin."

What shall we say then? What does the Bible say if we fail to worship the true God or accept a philosophy that is not true?

Colossians 2:8-12 - "See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes you yourselves captive by his so-called philosophy and intellectualism, and vain deceit (idle fancies and plain nonsense), following human tradition - men's ideas of the material (rather than the spiritual) world - just crude notions following the rudimentary and elemental teachings of the universe, and disregarding (the teachings of) Christ, the Messiah. (9)For in Him, the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead), continues to dwell in bodily form - giving complete expression of the divine nature. (10)And you are in Him, made full and have come to fullness of life - In Christ you too are filled with the Godhead: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and reach full spiritual stature. And He is the Head of all rule and authority - of every angelic principality and power. (11)In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, but in a (spiritual) circumcision (performed by) Christ by stripping off the body of the flesh (the whole corrupt, carnal nature with its passions and lusts). (12)(Thus you were circumcised when) you were buried with Him in (your) baptism, in which you were also raised with Him (to a new life) through (your) faith in the working of God (as displayed) when He raised Him up from the dead."

Well, Part 1 is plenty long enough, let's go on to Part 2 and see how God reveals himself to us, and how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit come into play.

======================================================================== Subject: God - Part 2

Part 2. How do the three persons of God reveal themselves to us?

Here we begin to see how the Bible reveals God. We shall see that God is revealed as God( the combination of all three), the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. We shall see that many times The scriptures tell us that "God" does something, and then will also tell us that Jesus and/or the Holy Spirit does this as well.

WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST? ===========

God - Acts 17:30-31 - "Such former ages of ignorance God, it is true, ignored and allowed to pass unnoticed; but no He charges all people everywhere to repent - that is, to change their minds for the better and heartily to amend their ways, with abhorrence for their past sins. (31)Because He has fixed a day when He will judge the world righteously (justly) by a Man Whom He has destined and appointed for that task, and He has made this credible and given conviction and assurance, and evidence to everyone by raising Him from the dead."

God, the Father - Galatians 1:1 - "Paul, an apostle - special messenger appointed and commissioned and set out - not from (any body of) men nor by or through any man, but by and through Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and God the Father Who raised Him from among the dead."

Jesus Christ, the Son - John 2:19-21 - "Jesus answered them, Destroy (undo) this temple and in three days I will raise it up again. (20)Then the Jews replied, It took forty-six years to build the temple (sanctuary), and will You raise it up in three days? (21)But He spoke of the temple which was His body."

The Holy Spirit - Romans 8:11 - "And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (then) He Who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to life your mortal (short-lived, perishable) bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you."

Here we see that not only "God" raised Christ, but we also the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

This being the first comparison posted in this "study", let's go on to some questions of the other ways. As I said in part 1, if an "other" way were just a different representation of our God, then we would need to see a Trinity, and all three parts of this "other" god doing the same thing. It seems to me in one of these other gods, 1 part created the world, one destroyed it, and one rebuilt it. As we go on, we will see that "God" did all of this. The other gods do not tell the same story. In many cases, as referenced back to part 1, they do not tell me to go north to get to Washington DC, but try to convince me to go West to California and accept something I was not looking for in the first place. Another way to put it, If I want to go north to Washington DC to see the President of the United States, they will tell me to go West to California to see the Vice President of Mobil Oil or something like that. Then they try and convince you that the VP of Mobil Oil is just as important as the President. After much discussion and confusion, you have totally forgotten that you were going to see the President, and that you wanted a Federal Bill passed, and you have missed your original destination and goal.

WHO REDEEMS US? =====================================================

God, the Father - John 6:44 - "No one is able to come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me attracts and draws him and gives him the desire to come to Me, and (then) I will raise him (from the dead) at the last day."

Jesus Christ, the Son - John 12:32 - "And I, if and when I am lifted up from the earth (on the cross), will draw and attract all men (Gentile as well as Jew) to Myself."

The Holy Spirit - I Corinthians 12:3 - "Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking under the power and influence of the (Holy) Spirit of God (ever) can say, Jesus be cursed! And no one can (really) say, Jesus is (my) Lord, except by and under the power and influence of the Holy Spirit."

There is a good lesson for us Christians in these verses. God must call the sinner, and brow beating and the like will not work. I believe it is Billy Graham that has a group that goes before him and prays for a period of time before he meets in any city or country. Mike Warnke had a good way of putting it as well, "Most Christians think that witnessing is writing 'Jesus' on the end of their finger and shoving it down someone's throat." This is not to discount the "flames" on some of the non-Christian lists where non-Christians will look at Christians who are in error and attempt to say "All Christians behave as such and such". Comparisons have come trying to say that the Klu Klux Klan and the like are Christian organizations and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that all Christians use the Bible to condone their hate.

WHO SANCTIFIES THE BELIEVER? ========================================

God, the Father - Jude 1:1 - "Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and brother of James, (writes this letter) to those who are called (chosen), dearly loved by God the Father (and separated, set apart), and kept for Jesus Christ:"

Jesus Christ, the Son - I Corr. 1:2 - "To the church (assembly) of God which is in Corinth, to those consecrated and purified and made holy in Christ Jesus, (who are) selected and called to be saints (God's people) together with all those who in any place call upon and give honor to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:"

The Holy Spirit - I Peter 1:2 - "Who were chosen and foreknown by God the Father and consecrated (sanctified, made holy) by the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and to be sprinkled with (His) blood: My grace (spiritual blessing) and peace be given you in increasing abundance -that spiritual peace to be realized in and through Christ, freedom from fears, agitation passions and moral conflicts."

Still more to come, but so far we see that God is one, and there is but one God, and there are 3 persons in that God. And, those 3 persons are consistent. They operate as one being, our God, so steadfast, so patient, so loving, so sure. Praise be to God!

GOD IS LIGHT ========================================================

God - Isaiah 60:20 - "Your sun shall no more go down, nor shall your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord shall be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended." Psalms 27:1 - "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear or dread? The Lord is my refuge and stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?"

Jesus Christ, the Son - John 8:12 - "Once more Jesus addressed the crowd: He said, I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not be walking in the dark, but will have the Light which is Life." Luke 2:32 - "A Light for revelation to the Gentiles - to disclose what was before unknown - and (to bring) praise and honor and glory to Your people Israel." John 1:9 - "There it was; the True Light (was then) coming into the world - the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light - that illumines every person."

GOD IS JUDGE =======================================================

God - Joel 3:12 - "Let the nations bestir themselves and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat, for there will I sit to judge all the nations round about." Abraham talking to God - Genesis 18:25 - "Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as do the wicked! Be that far from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth execute judgement and do righteously?" Romans 14:10 - "Why do you criticize and pass judgement on your brother? Or you, why do you look down upon or despise your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgement seat of God."

Jesus Christ, the Son - 2 Timothy 4:1 - "I charge (you) in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus Who is to judge the living and the dead, and by (in the light of) His coming and His kingdom:" 2 Corinthians 5:10 - "For we must all appear and be revealed as we are before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each one may receive (his pay) according to what he as done in the body, whether good or evil, (considering what his purpose and motive have been, and what he as achieved, been busy with and given himself and his attention to accomplishing)." John 12:48 - "Any one who rejects Me and persistently sets Me at naught, refusing to accept My teachings, has his judge (however); for the (very) message that I have spoken will itself judge and convict him on the last day."

GOD IS KING OF KINGS ===============================================

God - Jeremiah 10:10 - "But the Lord is the true God and the God of truth - the God Who is truth. He is the living God, and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, and the nations are not able to bear His indignation." Isaiah 44:6 - "Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first, and I am the last; besides Me there is no God." Psalms 47:8 - "God reigns over the nations; God sits upon His holy throne."

Jesus Christ, the Son - Matthew 2:1-6 - "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men (astrologers) from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, (2)Where is He Who has born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East at its rising, and have come to worship Him. (3)When Herod the king heard this, he was disturbed and troubled, and the whole of Jerusalem with him; (4)So he called together all the chief priests and learned men (scribes) of the people, and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born. (5)They replied to him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: (6)And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are not in any way least or insignificant among the chief cities of Judah; for from you shall come a Ruler (Leader) Who will govern and shepherd My people Israel." Luke 23:3 - "So Pilate asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He answered him, (It is just as) you say; I am." John 19:21 - "Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not write, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am King of the Jews."

GOD IS A GOOD SHEPHERD =============================================

God - Isaiah 40:11 - "He will feed His flock like a shepherd, He will gather the lambs in His arm, He will carry them in His bosom, and will gently lead those that have their young." Psalms 100:3 - "Know - perceive, recognize and understand with approval - that the Lord is God! It is He Who has made us, not we ourselves (and we are His)! We are His people and the sheep of His pasture." Psalms 23:1 - "The Lord is my shepherd (to feed, guide and shield me); I shall not lack."

Jesus Christ, the Son - John 10:11 - "I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd risks and lays down his (own) life for the sheep." Hebrews 13:20 - "Now may the God of peace - (Who is) the Author and the Giver of peace - and Who brought again from among the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood (that sealed, ratified) the everlasting agreement (covenant, testament)," I Peter 5:4 - "And (then) when the Chief Shepherd is revealed you will win the conqueror's crown of glory."

Part 4. How do the three persons of God reveal themselves to us?

GOD IS A ROCK =======================================================

God - Isaiah 17:10 - "Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation (O Judah) and have not been mindful of the Rock of your Strength, and your Stronghold; therefore you have planted pleasant nursery grounds and plantings (to Adonis, pots of quickly withered flowers used to set at their doors or in the courts of temples), and you have set the grounds with vine-slips of a strange god." II Samuel 22:32 - "For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?" Deuteronomy 32:4 - "He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are law and justice, a God of faithfulness, without breach or deviation, just and right is He."

Jesus Christ, the Son -I Corinthians 10:4 - "And they all drank the same supernaturally given drink. For they drank from a spiritual Rock which followed them - produced by the soul power of God Himself without natural instrumentality - and the Rock was Christ." I Peter 2:6-8 - "For thus it stands in Scripture: Behold, I am laying in Zion a chosen, (honored,) precious chief Cornerstone; and he who believes in Him - who adheres to, trusts in and relies on Him - shall never be disappointed or put to shame. (7)To you then who believe - who adhere to, trust in and rely on Him - is the preciousness; but for those who disbelieve (it is true), The (very) Stone which the builders rejected has become the main Cornerstone, (8)And a Stone that will cause stumbling, and a Rock that will give (men) offense; they stumble because they disobey and disbelieve (God's) Word, as those (who reject Him) were destined (appointed) to do."

GOD, THE FIRST AND THE LAST, THE ALPHA AND OMEGA ===================

God - Isaiah 48:12 - "Listen to me, O Jacob and Israel, My called; I am He. I am the first, I also am the last." Isaiah 44:6 - "Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of Host: I am the first, and I am the last; besides Me there is no God." Isaiah 43:10 - "You are My witnesses, says the Lord, and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know Me, believe Me, and remain steadfast to Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me." Isaiah 41:4 - "Who has prepared and done this, calling and guiding the destinies of the generations of the nations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first (existing before history began) and with the last (and ever present, unchanging God); I am He."

Jesus Christ, the Son - Revelation 1:17 - "When I saw Him I fell at His feet as if dead. But He laid His right hand on me and said, Do not be afraid! I am the First and the Last." Revelation 2:8 - "And to the angel (messenger) of the assembly (church) in Smyrna write, These are the words of the First and the Last, Who died and came to life again:" Revelation 22:13 - "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last (the Before all and at the End of all)."

GOD THE CREATOR ====================================================

God - Job 33:4 - "(It is) the Spirit of God that made me (which has stirred me up), and the breath of the Almighty that gives me the life (which inspires me)." Isaiah 40:28 - "Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding." Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God (prepared, formed , fashioned.) and created the heavens and the earth."

Jesus Christ, the Son - John 1:3 - "All things were made and came into existence through Him, and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being." Colossians 1:16:17 - "For it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him (by His service, intervention) and in and for him. (17)and He Himself existed before all things and in Him all things consist - cohere, are held together." Hebrews 1:10 - "And (further), You Lord, did lay the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the works of Your hands."

GOD IS OUR SAVIOR ==================================================

God - Psalms 106:21 - "They forgot God, their Savior, Who had done such great things in Egypt," Isaiah 43:3 - "For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior, I give Egypt (to the Babylonians) for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba (a province of Ethiopia) in exchange for your release."

Jesus Christ, the Son - John 4:22 - "You (Samaritans) do you know what you are worshipping - you worship what you do not comprehend. We do know what we are worshipping - we worship what we have knowledge of and understand; for (after all) salvation comes from (among) the Jews." I John 4:14 - "And (besides) we ourselves have seen (have deliberately and steadfastly contemplated), and bear witness that the Father has sent the Son (as the) Savior of the world." Acts 4:12 - "And there is salvation in and through no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by and in which we must be saved."

======================================================================== Subject: God - Part 5, conclusion

Part 5. How do the three persons of God reveal themselves to us?

GOD USES THE DIVINE NAME I AM (I AM THAT I AM) (EGO EIMI) ===========

God - Exodus 3:13,14 - "And Moses said to God, Behold, when I come to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is His name? What shall I say to them? (14)And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM and WHAT I AM and I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE; and He said, You shall say this to the Israelites, I AM has sent me to you!" Isaiah 43:10 - "You are My witnesses, says the Lord, and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know Me, believe Me and remain steadfast to Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me." Deuteronomy 32:39 - "See now that I, I am He, and there is no god beside Me; I kill and I make alive, I wound, and I heal; and there is none who can deliver out of My hand."

Jesus Christ, the Son - John 8:24 - "That is why I told you that you will die in (under the curse of) your sins. For if you do not believe that I am He (Who I claim to be) - if you do not adhere to, trust in and rely on Me - you will die in your sins." John 8:28 - "So Jesus added, When you have lifted up the Son of man (on the cross), you will realize (know, understand) that I am He (for Whom you look); and that I do nothing from Myself - of My own accord, or on my own authority - but I say (exactly) what my Father has taught Me." John 8:58 - "Jesus replied, I assure you. I most solemnly tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM." John 13:19 - "I tell you this now before it occurs, so that when it does take place you may be persuaded and believe that I am He - what I say I am, the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah." John 18:5,6 - "They answered Him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said to the, I am He. Judas, who was betraying Him, was also standing with them. (6)When Jesus said to them, I am He, they went backwards - drew back, lurched backward - and fell to the ground."

Well, this concludes this "study". Like I said, most of it was from my CARIS notes. It doesn't deal with the "drive" that Christians have to witness, etc., but it shows, as best as possible, the God we Christians worship, and hopefully explains why another god would simply be settling for "second best". Why link with a god who is now god when the One True God says in Matthew 11:28 - "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and over burdened, and I will cause you to rest - I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.".

Also, John 3:16-18 - "For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He (even) gave up His only-begottened (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish - come to destruction, be lost - but have eternal (everlasting) life. (17)For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge -to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on - the world; but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him. (18)He who believes on Him - who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him - is not judged (he who trust in Him never comes up for judgement; for him there is not rejection, no condemnation; he incurs no damnation). But he who does not believe (no cleave to, rely on, trust in Him) is judged already; (he has already been convicted; has already received his sentence) because he has not believed on and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God. - He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ's name.
