FOR YEAR A
FIRST READING: Isaiah 56:1(2-5)6-7 (The LORD says: "Foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, I will bring to my holy mountain, and my house shall be called a house of prayer for all people.")
PSALM 67 (May God bestow on us his grace, B | c B A Bc | d e d b | B - - with blessings rich provide us; d | c B c A | G EF G F | E - - and may the brightness of his face B | c B A Bc | d e d c | B - - to life eternal guide us, d | c B c A | G EF G F | E - - that we his saving health may know, G | F E D E | C D E - - his gracious will and pleasure, B | c B A Bc | d c B - - and also to the heathen show e | dc Bc d A | G F E - - Christ's riches without measure, D | G A Bc d | c B A - - and unto God convert them. c | B A GF EF | G F E - - - -
Thine over all shall be the praise and thanks of every nation, and all the world with joy shall raise the voice of exultation; for Thou shalt judge the earth, O Lord, nor suffer sin to flourish; Thy people's pasture is Thy word their souls to feed and nourish, in righteous paths to keep them.
Oh, let the people praise Thy worth, in all good works increasing; the land shall plenteous fruit bring forth, Thy word is rich in blessing. May God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit bless us! Let all the world praise him alone, let solemn awe possess us. Now let our hearts say, Amen.
Martin Luther (Es wolle Gott uns gnaedig sein), 1524 trans. Rishard Massie, 1851, alt. melody, Matthias Greitter, 1524; for harmony, see 101 CHORALES HARMONIZED BY J S BACH (Belwin-Mills Pub.), or various hymnals, esp. Lutheran.)
EPISTLE: Romans 11:13-15,29-32 (The present unbelief of the Jews is only temporary. God has has set them aside only for the moment, the better to bring the Gentiles into his kingdom. He has a plan for their eventual restoration.)
THE HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 15:21-28 (A Canaanite woman asks Jesus to heal her daughter. He says, "It is not right to give the children's bread to the puppies." She says, "But when the crumbs drop from the table, the puppies get them." He says, "Your faith is great; your wish is granted.")
NOTE ON THE READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL: It must be born in mind that Matthew is writing for a Jewish readership. He keeps reminding his Jewish readers that if they do not appreciate the grace that is offered them, it will be given to others who will appreciate it. So he tells them here that Christ was sent first to the Jews, but that if they do not accept him, he will give his blessings to Gentiles who have the perceptiveness to value them. The children have the first claim on the bread, but if they carelessly drop it on the floor, the family dog will know better than to despise it.

FOR YEAR C
FIRST READING: Ecclesiasticus 10:(7-11)12-18 Arrogance is hateful to the Lord and to mortals, And injustice is outrageous to both. Sovereignty passes from nation to nation on account of injustice and insolence and wealth.
How can dust and ashes be prond? Even in life the human body decays. A long illness baffles the physician, the king of today will die to morrow. For when one is dead, he inherits maggots and vermin and worms.
The beginning of human pride is to forsake the Lord, the heart has withdrawn from its Maker. For the beginning of pride is sin, and the one who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brings upon them unheard-of calamities, and destroys them completely.
The Lord overthrows the thrones of rulers, and enthrones the lowly in their places. The Lord plucks up the roots of the nations and plants the humble in their place. The Lord lays waste the lands of the nations, and destroys them to the foundations of the earth. He removes some of them and destroys them, and erases the memory of them from the earth.
Pride was not created for human beings, or violent anger for those born of women.
ALTERNATE READING: Proverbs 25:6-7 (It is better to put yourself too low and have the king raise you than put yourself too high and have him lower you.)

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 14:1,7-14 (As a guest at a banquet, choose a low seat and let your host raise you, rather than choosing a high seat and forcing your host to lower you. When giving a banquet, invite guests who cannot reward you with invitations to their table, and you will be rewarded at the heavenly banquet.)
