Computer Stuff

This page contains all kinds of computer related links. It was originally designed to mark the links describing all the tips and tricks necessary to keep Windows95 up and running. Those are still here, along with more genereal Windows help (since I still run Windows at home; I'm up to ME now). The top section, however, is dedicated to Linux. I am currently using Mandrake 7.2 for my research workstation, as I need the stability (i.e. I can't live with a blue screen of death stopping my work). I'm learning a lot and our IT guys even let me manage my own system. There are also links to software and hardware companies with which I've dealt and been quite happy.

Linux
Linux Online - The Linux source page
Linuxberg - the Tucows site for Linux software
RPM find - Linux packages for RedHat and Mandrake distributions
The Linux HOWTO Index
XFree86 - X for Linux
Colas XFree Modeline Generator - a great site if you're having trouble with your X-Windows and monitor
X11R6 Consortium - a page on the general X standard
Window Managers for X - a page highlighting all the window choices for Linux such as KDE and Gnome
Sun StarOffice - an office suit for Linux (it's OK but I'll go back to WordPerfect when WP2000 comes out for Linux)
Microsoft and Windows95
Microsoft
Microsoft Support - this is the fourth URL they've used for searching through thier technical support pages (I really wish they'd stop changing all their links!)
Windows Annoyances - a great site that became a book published by O'Reilly supporting Win95 and Win98 (I'm waiting to see the WinME stuff...)
Frank Condron's World O' Windows
Kim Komando's Komputer Klinic - she know's her stuff, but the site is not well orgnaized for someone seeking specific information and seems more focused on advertising her weekly syndicated radio call-in show
Software
Corel makers of the wonderful WordPerfect office package suite (it beats MS-Office hands down) Note: this site sucks! There are two instantaneous redirects making the "back" button useless except to keep bouncing you back to their site. Come on people, either don't keep changing your links, or learn to program your html friendlier!
Corel's Knowledge Base
Corel's FTP Site
Virtually UN*X! - a site with all kinds of cool utilities to help bring some of the power of UNIX to your Windows machine
Tucows - a shareware/freeware site for all plaforms
C|NET Donwload.com - PC shareware (Windows and Linux)
Magazines/Companies
O'Reilly Books Home Page
PC Magazine by Ziff Davis - a great source for everyhing PC (with a Microsoft bias)
PC Today & Processor - I've lost count of how many hardware upgrades I got through their listings
Warning: I would avoid dealing with the company PC Progress based out of Elk Grove Villiage, IL. I've had trouble with them and will no longer purchase from them nor can I recommend others purchase from them.
PC Mall - another site listing computer hardware for sale (not as many good deals as PC Today)
Intel - makers of the processors I currently use at work: a pair of PII/400's
AMD - makers of the processor I currently use at home: the Athelon/950
ATI Technologies Inc. - I've used their video cards in the past (now, if only they would distribute Linux drivers with all their newest cards)
Diamond Multimedia - I've used their video cards too; there seems to be more Linux support for them even if they don't distribute Linux drivers themselves!
Miscellaneous
Emazing formerly Tip World - Free tips and advice on computer related problems (and just about everything else it seems!)
BABEL - A Glossary of Computer Related Abbreviations and Acronyms
The Jargon File
Color Technology by Charles Poynton
The Easter Egg Archive - Easter Eggs are bits of somewhat entertaining code hidden in your software
