Character Height/Weight System for AD&D®
From the article "Realistic Vital Statistics: A New system
for figuring heights and weights" by Stephen Inniss in Dragon Magazine
91, 10-14 (November 1984) with some modifications by me based on a newsgroup
submission by Sam Thomas (a.k.a. Sinbad Sam).

This system was designed to deal with the problem sometimes encountered with the
relatively pure random height/weight system of the Player's Handbook. In that
system one starts with a minimum value of height and adds a random number to that
and then does so again with weight. However, the weight of the character is not at
all a function of the height. This new system creates a height and then a weight
which is based on that height. The other interesting feature of this system is that
it takes into account the character's strength, which gives the desirable result that
strong characters tend to be taller and meatier.
Character Height
After generating the character stats and choosing the race and class, one needs to
find the character height. This is done by looking up the race in Table A to get
the racial average height. The character's height can then vary from the average by
a percentage obtained from tables B1 and B2. The player rolls a d (3d10's where
the first one is the hundreds, the next is the tens, and the last is the ones place
for a randomly generated number from 1 to 1000) and then rolls the appropriate dice
to find the base percentage change. To this is added the percentage change based on
the character's strength. This final percent difference is then used to calculate
the character's height; round to the nearest inch.
Heights have been adjusted considerably for elves of all sub-races from those
accepted and "official" values. Although I have not increased their heights to
Tolkien-esque stature (i.e. 6 feet and taller) they are all over 5 feet tall
to make sure they remain in the M class size and are taller than dwarves. However,
if the rolls are right, very short elves can be rolled, they are just going to
be very uncommon.

Character Weight
Once the character height is known, the weight can be calculated. First, cross-reference
the character height to find the average character weight in table C. Note that this
given average weight is for human males. For females, use the weight given for a height
one inch shorter than the character. For non-humans this average weight is modified by
the weight multiplier given in table D. Then the average weight is adjusted by a percentage
based in part on a random roll of a d on table E1 and the character strength score
using table E2 just as in the percentage variation for character height.
The weight as a function of height chart has been slightly modified from the version
given in the original article. Since the weights are assumed to be for a human of the
various heights (even for those outside the norm) the numbers have been adjusted to
fit the equation given at the bottom of the table. This assumes that when you scale a
human male, they scale identically in all dimensions so the weight is proportional to
the cube of a linear measurement (e.g. height) ratio. This affected the chart
mainly at the smallest of the heights. The weight multipliers have also been slightly
adjusted by me so that final weights are, in my opinion, more "realistic".
